Julian's big news
Frantic dash as the baby comes early
Profiler star Julian McMahon and his wife, model and actress Brooke Burns, were having a quiet night at home in the Hollywood hills. They were enjoying their time together, happy in the knowledge that the baby Brooke was expecting wasn't due for another month.
Suddenly, though, the evening peace was shattered when the mum-to-be realised something was stirring. Baby was ready and quite definitely on its way! With Julian leaping to attention, the couple made a frantic dash to an LA hospital where, hours later, the former Baywatch babe Brooke gave birth to a beautiful daughter, Madison Elizabeth.
Only a few days earlier, Julian, 31, and his bride of six months had told Woman's Day how excited they were about the baby. The deliriously happy couple talk about nothing else, with an ecstatic Julian even revealing the name and the sex.
"Our new daughter will be called Madison Elizabeth!" he exclaimed.
"We love the name Madison, and Elizabeth is Brooke's middle name. Now doesn't Madison Elizabeth McMahon roll nicely off the tongue?
"I've never been more excited in my whole life about anything".
Julian seems to have found real happiness with the 22-year-old actress from Dallas, Texas. Their marriage, the second for Julian, took place just before Christmas in St Mark's Church at Sydney's Darling Point.
When Woman's Day caught up with them, even with the birth of their first baby so close, Brooke was happy to answer the question, do she and Julian plan to have any more kids?
"I'm sure we will. Three is a nice balance. But let me have this one first, then we'll talk again," she laughed.
julian is looking for a new job now that Profiler has ended its five-year run. His new movie, Chasing Sleep, with Jeff Daniels, comes out later this year. "But I want to enjoy my daughter before going back to work," he explained.
Julian, who grew up as the son of the late Sir William McMahon, a former Australian Prime Minister, added that he'd bring what he learnt during his own childhood to his new role as father.
"Of course, when I grew up it was a whole different generation," he said.
"And until you get on that road yourself you don't really know, but I believe I'll be an active dad.
"I believe a father, should be visible to his child and should be a teacher as well as a good friend."
Brooke added that she's an old-fashioned girl and is taking parenthood seriously. "I want to be a hands-on mother. For my entire life I've looked forward to, and prayed for, the time when I would get to be a mother. This comes first.
"Modelling and acting are fun and you get paid well. But I can't imagine finding more joy than being with your child and having a part in the development of a new human being on this world," she said.
Brooke looked great and said her pregnancy had been remarkably easy.
"Never any morning sickness. Can you believe it? Oh, sure there have been emotional ups and downs, but Julian has always been there for me, so sweet and a real rock.
"I know he'll be a wonderful father -the best in the world. I guess I'm a little prejudiced, but my own dad said the same things.
"My parents surprised me by flying to LA for the baby shower. My dad is not a man of many words, but he told me, 'The more I get to know Julian the more I love him.'
"He's right. Julian is very strong, but in his strenght is a lot of gentleness. That's important in raising a child."
