Julian reveals 'I want to be a Dad.'
by Cathy Griffin
Julian star of Profiler, says although he may not be the marrying kind any more, he has a burning desire to become a dad.
Despite being linked to several Hollywood beauties, including his current love, Baywatch star Brooke Burns, Julian is adamant he's not in the market for marriage.
In an exclusive interview with New Idea, the Aussie hunk speaks candidly about his most intimate feelings on life, love and fatherhood -- and even about former wife Dannii Minogue.
At 30, Julian's strong paternal instincts have brought offers from beautiful women eager and willing to have his baby -- something he says he has considered.
'I've thought about not ever being married again, so friends have offered to have my child. I think that could be a cool thing,' he says.
'I think that once I have the child, I would be a 24 hour, seven-days-a-week parent. I'd want to be with my child all the time.
'And it would be difficult if two people live separate lives -- even in separate cities. I don't know if I could easily do that ( have a child with a woman outside of marriage).'
So what about his lady love Brooke Burns? 'She's a beautiful girl!' Julian enthuses. 'She's absolutely a fantastic girl! But I've said before that I just want to focus on my career.
'To me focusing on a relationship is a huge task, a huge responsibility and commitment. It's time, it's effort, it's work -- it's so many things that my life is full of already. To add another level to that would freak me out a little!
'I wouldn't want to do it in a half-hearted way. you know, I was married. I got divorced. It didn't work and I don't want to cheapen anything by just allowing it to be something that it can't.'
While he puts the skids on taking his romantic relationships to the next level, Julian is proud he has remained friends with every woman with whom he has been involved. And when it comes to ex-wife Dannii Minogue, they're not only still friends, but he's down right protective!
'I don't mind reading about Dannii with other men so much,' he says. 'I just mind reading about her being anorexic, or being this or being that. She gets slammed a lot, you know. That just drives me crazy!
'She's such a beautiful person. When friends of mine -- people I really care about -- get slammed by people who don't even know them, that makes me angry!
Another emotion he has generally hidden from the public is also getting an airing. In a recent guest stint in the new US TV comedy Will & Grace -- about a lawyer and a designer who would be perfect for each other, except for the fact he's gay -- Julian shows off his ability as a funny man.
He admits: 'I enjoy comedy. I love Saturday Night Live -- it's so out there!
'The sitcom was an extraordinary experience because I had never done one before and to work with this amazing director James Burrows, and phenomenal cast, plus a brilliant script, was incredible.'
It's another sunny afternoon in Hollywood Hills, but although Julian's plan for Down Under is leaving in just a few hours, he is still not packed. It's clear he's torn about leaving the beautiful home he has bought and refurbished, and especially leaving his two year old labradors Orso and Zack, on whom he lavishes love and attention. Despite having retained a trustworthy dog sitter for the two weeks he is away in Australia for a summer break, Julian is not completely at ease about leaving his two 'babies'.
As if on cue, Orso lets out a soft growl as he sleeps a short distance from his adoring master.
'That's Orso having dreams, chasing rabbits,' Julian says, grinning.
'No, he's chasing mountain lions. That's what I call him, Mountain Lion.'
Julian is especially grateful to have the pups after losing them for two days last month while on holiday at Yosemite National Park.
While Julian was gone from the rented house, a friend accidentally left the door open and the 'boys' got out!
'They were gone for two whole days,' he says. 'I was a basket case. I searched everywhere for them, night and day.
'It was horrible! I really put everything I had learned working on Profiler to good use. I was Detective McMahon and I found them!
'We were driving in blinding snow on the second day and there they were! They just appeared like an apparition! At first when I called them, they were scared, so I just put the car in park in the middle of the road and fell out onto the ground to be on their level.
'Straight away, they were both on top me, licking my face! I can't even describe the feeling of elation that came over me at that moment.'
While its still unofficial, Julian believes his hit show will be picked up for the next season. He appreciates its success, although the frantic pace on the TV series hardly gives him time to think of doing other projects.
'As much as you appreciate what you have, its a little frustrating sometimes,' he says. 'My show keeps me really busy. It's a packed schedule.'
Then a faraway look in those gorgeous blue eyes of his, Julian adds: 'I can't wait to go home to Australia. you know, its kind of weird. I love living here. I know that when I get off the plane, I'll be really excited, but I almost don't want to leave.'
Isn't he looking forward to relaxing in his homeland?
He laughs. 'Have you ever been to Australia? Australians are a different kind of beast. They're party animals. I have to save myself up for the two weeks. I relax when I get back here, not while I'm there!
'But I love going there. Actually, I can't wait! I know its going to be a fantastic!'
